RIVERlation
Dec 9th - 14th

Hamburg, Berlin and Bangkok have one important thing in common: They are all characterized by long and dynamic rivers – Elbe, Spree and Chao Phraya River. Moreover, they are megacities with millions of citizens and inspiring cultural scenes. In December 2017, ÜBERMUT PROJECT finally made its way to Bangkok in order to connect the German creative scene represented by Hamburg and Berlin with Thailand’s most influential and contrasty city.

While exploring new collaborative spaces is our mission, establishing and maintaining them is the goal of the Creative District in Bangkok.  It is an urban riverside area that offers art, music and food while constantly preserving its history as well as its various clusters of communities. With “Riverlation” this indispensable lifeline of Bangkok temporarily hosted artists of its German counterparts, Berlin and Hamburg.

In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Thailand and with the support of further partners like River City Bangkok or Documentary Club Thailand we presented a multi-layered program with a diverse mix of artists.

It started with an Übermut booth at Goethe Institut’s German Christmas market, where design products made by Berlin and Hamburg based designers provided by of/Berlin and B-Lage Hamburg, have been offered.

The presentation at the Christmas Market has been followed by a three-day program with Berlin, Hamburg and Bangkok based artists from December 12-14.

In the surroundings of the famous Chao Phraya river, Berlin dance artist Sophie Camille Brunner and Bangkok based performance artist Ulrich Gottlieb presented an artistic interpretation of their personal “river stories” with other local performers. The performance had been worked out in a dance workshop lasting several days.

Carefully selected short film screenings by interfilm Berlin and the Hamburg based collaborative A Wall is a Screen have been presented at impressive locations in the Creative District of Bangkok, such as the rooftop of River City Bangkok – a four-story building known to house antiques, textile shops and art galleries, or Warehouse 30 – an old warehouse from the outside - with a whole other world inside: almost 6,000 m² of space for brimming creativity. The film programs have been enriched by a short film seminar by interfilm Berlin at Goethe Institut Bangkok and a two-day film workshop by A Wall is a Screen at River City Bangkok.

Bangkok's impressive East Asiatic Company building was the final spot for the popular film tour by A Wall is a Screen, where the audience was enthralled by the mix of creativity from Berlin and Hamburg. After the film tour had been finished, Tagtool artist Benjamin Rabe (Hamburg) turned the building into an illuminated stage for another dance performance and showed live animations in the surrounding of the river.

For the grand finale the Berlin riot rock band BONSAI KITTEN and the Thai band Nett shared the stage of the club Whiteline to present the German vibrant music scene.
